Abstract

"Newsworthy" piece on Jim Thomas, Old Orchard Beach town manager, with a discussion of his goal to reinvent the town as more than just a summertime destination. Construction of the Grand Victorian, a $20 million condominium and retail project, and plans by developer Tim Swenson for an even bigger development are signs of momentum toward that goal. Thomas notes that currently 90 percent of local businesses are seasonal, and 30 percent of the town's housing stock is made up of vacation properties. Some critics fear the changes mean the end of Old Orchard Beach's traditional summertime character.
