Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on the federal Real ID Act, which mandates various security measures dealing with driver's licenses, and takes effect in May 2008. State officials like Matt Dunlap, secretary of state, are concerned that Maine won't be able to comply with the law, noting that the act has unrealistic schedules and provides little federal funding. Under the law, if Maine does not adopt all of the security improvements mandated, airport security officials can prevent a person holding a Maine license from boarding a plane. With comments by Dana Connors, president of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce; and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Operations Committee.
