Abstract
"Focus on Western Maine" piece on independent cinema owner John Moore, who opened Farmington's Narrow Gauge Cinemas in 1995. He strives to cut costs while keeping ticket prices at the same $5 he charged when he started. He partners with local restaurants, offers gift certificates, and buys and books films himself. In 2003, he bought the historic Strand theater in Skowhegan and built an addition to it. He characterizes the industry as "in upheaval," citing DVDs, the growing problem of piracy, and the transition to digital projection technology, but says it is a good time to be an independent theater owner.
