Abstract

"Business Maine: Statewide" piece on a recent report by a University of Southern Maine think tank that estimates the state could save more than $100 million if it were to adopt school reforms. The estimate from the Center for Education Policy, Applied Research and Evaluation is based on the state adopting 13 drastic changes proposed by a panel of educators. The changes include reducing the number of school districts from 286 to 35, and funding only large school construction projects. David Silvernail, director of the center, said other recommendations include increased teacher pay and creating a $200 million college account for Maine schoolchildren.
