Abstract

"Focus on Energy & Utilities" piece on the famously maverick town of Athens, which is facing a proposal by Mass.-based GenPower LLC to place a biomass electricity generating plant on the site of the former Boralex incinerator site. Boralex closed following a fire that led to the discovery that the plant was burning demolition debris in addition to wood chips. A town moratorium on large-scale industrial projects has so far blocked the proposed facility, which would burn demolition debris, much of it trucked in from Mass. Many of the back-to-the landers who were drawn to Athens make their living from the land and don't want to see it polluted. New Hampshire has a statewide moratorium on burning construction and demolition debris (CDD).
