Abstract
"Focus: Health Care" piece on the new University of Maine Graduate School in Biomedical Sciences(GSBS), a collaboration between several Maine research institutions and colleges. GSBS allows students like Christopher McCarty to work with scientists around the state while working toward their doctorate via video conferencing. The biomedical industry is still relatively small in Maine, but has grown by 44 percent since 2000, to more than 500 employees. Keith Hutchinson, interim director of the new program, credits University of Maine President Robert Kennedy for his support for biomedical research. Patricia Hand, administrative director of Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, says the program will help biomedical research become an economic engine in the state.
