Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on a recent assessment of Maine's research and development investments for the period from 2000 to 2005. Michael Luger and Brent Lane, professors from the University of North Carolina, reported that the largest investments were focused on developing the state's R&D capacity. Those funds were invested in the University of Maine System, The Jackson Laboratory and other nonprofit research organizations. In most states, the industrial private sector is the largest source of R&D investments. But in Maine, the amount of investments by nonprofit organizations is now 3rd in the nation. Maine is at the bottom of the national list for private-sector investment.
