Abstract
Profile of John Richardson, Governor John Baldacci's nominee for commissioner of Maine's Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD). Richardson, a former Democratic state representative from Brunswick, has strong legislative support for his nomination. Outgoing commissioner Jack Cashman is expected to take an economic-advising job inside the governor's office. Earlier this month Baldacci announced plans to combine DECD with the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation to form the Department of Commerce. Richardson's economic development plan is consistent with recommendations outlined in the Brookings Institution report, including the development of industry clusters and increased funding for research and development.
