Abstract

North Carolina-based FairPoint Communications announced last month that it plans to acquire Verizon's 1.5 million telephone lines in northern New England, poising it to become the largest telephone company in Maine. If the $2.7 billion deal is approved, FairPoint promises to expand high-speed Internet access in rural markets. Walt Leach of FairPoint says his company's focus on rural markets makes it better equipped than Verizon to serve communities in Maine. With comments by Stephen Ward, Maine Public Advocate; Jaimie Logan, executive director of the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce; and Jeff Kagan, an independent telecom analyst.
