Abstract
"Focus: Building & Real Estate" piece on Hallowell, with a focus on the success of historic preservation efforts that have turned the once grim downtown into a lively destination. In 1969, Hallowell became one of the first cities to embrace historic preservation when citizens rallied to fight a proposal to turn the city's main street into a four-lane highway. Property values in Hallowell are relatively high, due in part to the security of knowing that the way the city looks today is likely how it will look in the future. With comments by Jerry Mahoney, president of Hallowell's historic preservation group, Row House Inc.; Earle Shettleworth, director of the Maine State Historic Preservation Commission; and longtime resident Shirley McKay.
