Abstract

The Maine Speakout Project trains volunteers to lead discussions on the challenges of being gay and lesbian in Maine. This year it plans to target the business community. Ten percent of the workforce is gay or lesbian, so equitable treatment of employees is good business and a civil rights obligation. Director Jonathan Lee, formerly the director of major donor contributions for Maine Won't Discriminate, says the Speakout's non-confrontational dialogues are the best way to alleviate anxiety about homosexuality.
