Abstract
"Focus on Greater Portland" piece on Sea Bags of Portland, co-owned by Beth Shissler and Hannah Kubiak, makers of nautical-themed tote bags out of recycled sails. They are moving across Custom House Wharf to a larger space to keep up with Sea Bags' furious growth over the last year and a half. This year, sales are expected to grow by 50 percent, despite minimal paid advertising, thanks to spreads in fashion magazines and the New York Times Style section. About 30 percent of the bags are produced at the Maine Correctional Institute's Women's Center. To comply with zoning mandating marine use of the wharf, the company repairs fishing gear.
