Abstract
"Focus on Greater Portland" piece on Nick Nikazmerad, owner of Eastman Industries of Portland, who bought Ingersoll Equipment Co., a garden-tractor maker in Wisconsin, two years ago. Nikazmerad, 61, retired to Lovell, but created Eastman Industries and bought Ingersoll after seeing the potential in HoverMowers, machines that float above the grass. He was chosen "International Innovator of the Year" in 2004 by the Maine International Trade Center. He moved Eastman to a larger facility, scrapped nearly $600,000 of obsolete Ingersoll inventory, and still moved almost 50 tractor-trailer loads to Maine. With details on Eastman's "lean manufacturing" philosophy and acquisition tips from Jack Cashman, economic advisor to Gov. John Baldacci.
