Abstract

Profile of Tom Myron, education director of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. Myron, who now trains youngsters across Maine in music, credits exposure to good orchestras as a child for his lifetime interest in composition. Two-hundred-and-fifty teenagers play in the Portland Symphony Youth Orchestra, one of the oldest youth orchestras in the country. 19,000 pre-school and primary school children attended the PSO's Kinderkonzerts last year, and Myron and PSO conductor Toshiyuki Shimada have written an entire teacher's guide and curriculum to teach music to school children in grades 3-8.
