Abstract
"Focus on Transportation & Trade" piece on deteriorating bridges in Maine. The Maine Department of Transportation has a list of 288 bridges at risk of being posted for weight or closed within ten years, but has only enough funding to replace 14 of the 32 bridges that should be retired each year. MDOT says Maine municipalities will need to shoulder more of the repair costs. One of the closed bridges, Walker's Shop Bridge in Bridgton, facilitated convenient travel in the downtown. About 14 percent of Maine's bridges are structurally deficient, compared to a national average of about 12 percent.
