Abstract

"Focus on Tourism & Hospitality" piece on reactions to a proposal to raise Maine's lodging tax from the current 7 percent to 10 percent. The New England average is 8.95 percent. Some innkeepers think any increase should go to tourism marketing. Frozen at 2002 levels, such promotional funding was recently increased to $8.9 million for the 2008/09 fiscal year. Vaughn Stinson, director of the Maine Tourism Association, feels the figure should be increased to $12.9 million, still behind the $22 million average that other states spend. With arguments by those concerned for and against the tax proposal.
