Abstract

"Focus on Professional Services" piece on pro bono work performed by Maine lawyers. Jack Manheimer, a partner at Pierce Atwood, for three years running has accepted more pro bono cases from the Portland-based Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) than any other Maine attorney. Maine is second in the nation for legal work done on a pro bono basis, with state's attorneys giving $1.7 million dollars worth of hours last year. Besides the deep need in Maine and a collegial law community, groups like Pine Tree Legal Assistance and VLP actively recruit lawyers. With details on both organizations, which help represent clients who might not be able to afford a lawyer.
