Abstract
"Focus on Down East Region" piece on Peter Lord, executive director of the Island Astronomy Institute in Tremont and leader of the Night Sky Initiative to reduce light pollution around Acadia National Park. Stars have become less visible as strip malls in Ellsworth, street lights in Bar Harbor, and even a Wal-Mart in Bangor and lights from Portland bleed light into the view from Cadillac Mountain. A study done for the initiative shows that Bar Harbor emits enough light to limit viewing to 1,500 stars out of a possible 13,000. The group, which includes Acadia National Park and Friends of Acadia, wants to get the International Dark Sky Association's new Dark Sky Park certification.
