Abstract

In a volatile stock market, educational institutions, including the University of Maine, have caught onto "alternatives." The University of Maine Foundation has nearly a fifth of its endowment in alternative investments like hedge funds and private equity. Colby College in Waterville invests more than a fifth of its endowment in hedge funds. Investors believe the diversity, despite recent hedge-fund casualties, protects them and offers a better return.
