Abstract
Madison-based Backyard Farms produced nearly 17 million pounds of hydroponic tomatoes in its 24-acre greenhouse during its first year of operation. About 35 percent of the company's "Backyard Beauties" were sold in grocery stores in Maine. Armand Provost of Associated Grocers of Maine says the tomatoes are top of line. Founder Paul Sellew and CEO Roy Lubetkin now want to spend $125 million to build up to three new massive greenhouses, a research and development facility and a biomass plant. Backyard Farms has made a significant impact on the local economy, and the economic ripple effect has been substantial.
