    Abstract

    "Business Maine" piece reporting that the average compensation for Maine's 28,108 government employees was $48,080 in 2006, the 29th highest in the country, according to the Maine Heritage Policy Center. The average private sector employee in Maine, however, earned $39,629 in 2006, the 42nd highest in the country. In other news, a federal audit shows that Maine owes $29.7 million to the federal government for Medicaid overbilling in 2002 and 2003. Maine officials say they'll contest the audit.
