Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on the Legislature's Appropriations Committee, which is struggling to deal with a predicted revenue shortfall in excess of $95 million. As soon as Maine Revenue Services adjusted the revenue projections down by $95 million, it became clear that revenues were not following even this modified plan. Sen. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, said this will be a very difficult budget with unpopular spending cuts. State Police Chief Pat Fleming said his agency will likely have to cut personnel. To add to the budget woes, federal Medicaid rules changes eliminate just over $45 million from the state budget and $141 million from Maine communities over the next two years.
