Abstract

"Focus on Northern Maine region" piece on C.B. Smith, 53, who after being laid off by Caribou tax software company ATX, launched Virtual Management Solutions in Presque Isle to offer remote IT support. He didn't want to move for a new job, and began planning his exit when ATX was bought by an Illinois company, resulting in the first round of layoffs. Smith saved his own career and also offered jobs to 27 other displaced workers. His ATX experience allowed him to handpick his new employees for customer service skills. He hopes to bring on more of the remaining 100 employees who lost their jobs. With details on the company and on ATX, now called CCH.
