Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on a bill to reduce the monthly fee on phone bills to fund the E911 system as the number of phones in the state increases and the fund's surplus grows. Mainers are currently paying 50 cents a month per phone. The money pays for the operation of the 911 phone system statewide. Rep. Herb Adams (D-Portland) and others are angry at the appropriations committee for taking $2.6 million from the fund to help balance the state budget shortfall. Adams said that no matter what level of surplus is maintained, there will likely be efforts to use it to help balance future budgets.
