Abstract

Historically, Maine has not tracked the sporadic settlements it receives from lawsuits, but this July, the Attorney General's Office will deliver the first biennial report to the Legislature outlining the amount in settlement payments the state receives each year. So far the biggest settlement has been a 1998, $58 million settlement from major tobacco companies. With details on how, with limited resources, the state chooses to participate in consumer protection lawsuits.
