Abstract
Blethen Maine Newspapers, the parent company of the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram and other Maine newspapers, is trying to dismantle the newspaper union because of a contract clause that ensure's the contract's existence after a sale. Blethen Maine filed a lawsuit to dismiss the union and says it urgently needs to sell its papers and other assets to avoid defaulting on bank loans. Until the union issue is resolved, the sale is likely to be on hold. Members of the Portland Newspaper Guild say they won't back down.
