Abstract
Monticello potato farmer Daniel Corey is staying on top of an increasingly competitive business by exporting seed potatoes. Recent demand from Brazil has allowed him to pay two other farmers more than twice what they were getting in the domestic market. Corey sits on the U. S. Potato Board's export committee and is a partner in a seed tissue generation facility in Island Falls. Jim Gerritsen, of Wood Prairie Farm in Bridgwater, found his niche selling organic heirloom seed potatoes on the Internet. Other farmers use GPS technology to guide tractors and high-tech harvesters and graders to lower their labor costs and increase efficiencies.
