Abstract

"Focus on Health Care" piece with an interview with Steven Michaud, president of the Maine Hospital Association. He discusses how high energy costs and $600 million in unpaid Medicaid reimbursements are strapping Maine's hospitals. A welcome development will be the state's payment of half that debt. Some hospitals have had to take out lines of credit to meet their payrolls. He says the larger problem is that the state has a Medicaid program it can't afford. He discusses Maine's high emergency room use, which might be the result of a physician shortage. The state has a relatively low rate of uninsured residents.
