Abstract

The U.S. Department of Labor is auditing 37 logging companies in Maine that have applied to hire foreign workers. Tensions between Canadian and American loggers in the North Woods have escalated during the recession, with Maine loggers complaining about possible hiring violations by companies employing Canadian loggers. Canadians will also accept a lower wage because the American dollar goes farther in Canada. Gov. John Baldacci has been a major catalyst in the state investigation of possible hiring violations.
