Abstract

"Focus on Health Care" piece on Maine's HealthInfoNet initiative, which is up and running after six years of preparation. The demonstration project commingles patient data from a number of Maine's large health care providers in one secure system. The electronic system is expected to create annual savings of up to $20 million by 2011. It is unusual for a rural state to be on the cutting edge of such an expensive and complex issue.
