Abstract

1,750 manufactured homes were shipped into Maine in 1996, far more than to any other New England state, and modular homes (homes prefabricated over basements) are growing at an even faster rate. Improved quality and new government regulations have spurred the growth of manufactured housing. Today's modular homes are indistinguishable from stick-built houses, and 60% to 65% of the state's modular homes are built in Maine. The largest producer is Oxford Homes, Inc., in Oxford. Details.
