Abstract

A decade and a half after the University of Maine caught the national hockey craze and skyrocketed in popularity, it has been forced to spend $620,000 to defend itself against violations charged by the NCAA and uncovered by a Biz magazine investigation. Of 71 violations at the school, 60 concerned hockey. UMaine hockey, which only became a varsity sport in 1978, can trace its popularity to coach Shawn Walsh. Details.
