Abstract

"Focus on Down East Region" piece by Christopher Gardner, executive director of the Eastport Port Authority, which achieved record growth up until the recent downturn. The port is the deepest natural seaport in the continental United States. It began to diversify after the idling of the Domtar Pulp Mill, strengthening its relationship with the expanding wind energy market both locally and abroad. There is talk of using stimulus funds to provide rail connectivity to the port, which would overcome a major hurdle to its development.
