    Abstract

Portland's METRO bus system will introduce its battery-powered ZIP commuter shuttles by April. The buses have no engine or transmission, can drive 60-80 miles on a seven-hour charge, and will pollute 22 tons a year less than conventional buses. They will shuttle passengers from commuter lots every ten minutes during rush hour.
