Abstract
Letter from Marianne Cufone, director of Washington, D.C.-based Fish Program, Food & Water Watch, on the pitfalls of increased fish farming. The U.S. exports 71 percent of farmed fish, produced in accordance with stringent standards, while importing the same species, which are often of lower quality. About three pounds of wild fish are needed to produce one pound of farmed fish, and the depletion of wild prey fish for feed disrupts a delicate ecosystem balance.
