Abstract
"Focus on Northern Maine" piece on the Montreal Maine & Atlantic Railway, which took over the bankrupt Bangor & Aroostook Railroad in 2003. A few hours later, B&A's largest customer, Great Northern Paper, filed for bankruptcy. Today, the downturn in the lumber market, the recession, and the closure of more mills is forcing MM&A to seek federal approval to abandon 233 miles of track, roughly half of what it purchased. Gov. John Baldacci says the loss of track in Aroostook County would be a blow to northern Maine's economy, and the state is cobbling together money to buy the track, including sending a bond issue to voters. With details on how freight loads have fallen drastically and on why the track is necessary.
