Abstract
When HP Hood Co. dropped 10 Maine organic dairy farms from its stable of producers last fall, nine farms joined to form MOOMilk, Maine's Own Organic Milk. In Vermont, the cooperative gained L3C status, which blends an LLC with a nonprofit, but MOOMilk operates in Maine. Hannaford Bros. Co., recently dropped the retail price of its product on the shelves, giving the company a boost. Other assistance has come from Oakhurst Dairy in Portland, Smiling Hill Farms in Westbrook and Stonyfield Farms in New Hampshire, among others who support the members' effort to preserve their working farms. The company's low-profit corporate structure has drawn interest from other types of farmers.
