Abstract
"Focus on Greater Bangor" piece on defense contracts that could bring long-awaited prosperity to the Penobscot Nation on Indian Island and surrounding areas. Indian Island has a 20 percent unemployment rate and an average life expectancy of 58 years. More than 180 tribal-owned 8(a) companies across the nation have obtained billions of dollars in federal contracts, through a program offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Only a handful of tribes have experienced major success with the program. Congress is debating a limit on how much defense work can be allocated to the nation's tribes. With details on defense contracts that the tribe hopes to begin working on this fall in the vacant Olamon Industries building on Indian Island.
