Abstract
"Public Engagement" piece on The Maine Heritage Policy Center's report, "Fix the System: Freeing Maine Families from Welfare Dependency." Maine ranks second among the states in the percentage of its population on food stamps, Medicaid, and TANF assistance, and the state spends a higher portion of its budget on public welfare than 48 other states. Over the past decade, welfare dependency has grown in both good times and bad, although Maine has lower levels of poverty than the average state. To fix the problem, Maine should tighten eligibility requirements, employ diversion strategies, make work a requirement, impose strict time limits and sanctions, and bring accountability and transparency to agencies running the welfare system.
