Abstract

Turner livestock importer Jay Roebuck's farm is the way station for dairy cows that are quarantined before being shipped overseas to Turkey via the port of Eastport. This summer, Eastport became the first port in New England to win temporary permission from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to export livestock. Turkey has a growing population interested in dairy products. Chris Gardner, executive director of the Eastport port authority, has already received five inquiries from both domestic and overseas entities interested in shipping livestock through Eastport. Portland might become an alternative port for shipping livestock.
