Abstract

A few years ago, the Nature Conservancy, in collaboration with the Island Institute and the Penobscot East Resource Center, bought two commercial fishing permits to lease to fishermen at a discount, in return for their agreeing to test sustainable fishing gear and report on where they find fish. The group is raising money to buy as many as five more permits. Total groundfish landings in Maine have dropped from a high of 44.8 million pounds in 1991 to 6.6 million pounds in 2009. Fishermen are able to sell sustainably harvested fish at a higher price, and so far the program has been successful.
