Abstract

"Focus Technology" piece on the University of Maine's new supercomputer is part of a broader vision to expand Maine's cyberinfrastructure and make Maine a center for high-performance computing. This initiative called CIDER û Cyberinfrastructure Investment for Development û aims to promote the supercomputer to businesses as a cloud resource which could help existing and new Maine companies cut back on costs. In order for their plan to succeed, there must also be coordinated efforts to expand fiber optic networks and building a large and highly skilled IT workforce. And opportunities exist for data centers to share space with paper mills and benefit from lower energy costs.
