Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece describing Governor Paul LePage's budget decisions. LePage believes improving Maine's business climate is the only way to improve Maine's economy and proposes lowering overall tax rates and adapting federal tax provisions. Other budget proposals include raising the retirement age for most state employees to 65, freezing cost-of-living adjustments for current retirees and limiting future increases to 2%, and requiring state employees to contribute an additional 2% to the pension system. Since state Medicaid benefits cannot be changed due to federal requirements, LePage proposes capping municipal revenue sharing and reducing state reimbursement for general assistance.
