Abstract

"Focus Real Estate/Construction/Design" piece on Porter Drywall, Maine's largest drywall contractor. Instead of retreating when the economy collapsed, Ken Porter decided to expand his business, employing new techniques and leading industry efforts to pass a Maine law tightening the definition of an independent contractor. After working on the first project in Maine to use prefabricated wall panels, Porter started using this technique for smaller projects as well. Porter created a coalition of several drywall companies and an acoustic ceiling company which won a bid to build MaineGeneral's new hospital in Augusta, the largest drywall job ever undertaken in Maine.
