Abstract
"Focus Energy: Out with Oil" piece on switching to natural gas for business and home heating. While natural gas still represents a small portion of Maine's heating sector, it is currently 30%-50% cheaper to burn than heating oil. Fluctuating oil prices and lower natural gas prices have led to increased investment in natural gas including a recently approved $80 million, 60-mile long natural gas pipeline that will be the largest in Maine. With a history of natural gas expansion in Maine, brief case studies of Maine businesses who have made the switch to natural gas, and a graph depicting the average end-user fuel prices for No. 2 heating oil, natural gas, and wood pellets in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont between 1996 and 2010.
