Abstract

"Focus Down East" piece on marketing techniques and new technology used by Maine blueberry growers to meet increased demand and reap higher profits. The Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine has successfully promoted the high antioxidant value of blueberries. Although the total weight of blueberries harvested was lower in 2010 than in 2009, the cost per pound increased by nearly 25 cents and the 2010 total crop value reached almost $51 million. 2011 prices are expected to be even higher and improved tools for harvesting, crop management, pest control, and pollenation are necessary to increase productivity to meet demands.
