Abstract
"Focus Real Estate/Construction/Design" piece on Maine Farmland Trust's ambitious goal to protect 100,000 acres in addition to the 25,000 acres they have already preserved since 1999. Agriculture is one of Maine's largest industries and many newcomers to the industry would like to gain access to affordable land to farm. Between 1997-2007, the number of farms in Maine increased by 13%. The trust uses agricultural easements to make up the difference between the farm value and the development value of the land. The trust works with partners such as Land for Maine's Future and the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association to find funding and to help prepare new farmers through apprenticeships and business planning skills.
