Abstract
"Focus Lewiston/Auburn" piece on Procter & Gamble's inclusive hiring program for its new FlexiCenter manufacturing facility in Auburn. Before creating their own program inspired by an executive's suggestion, several P&G employees visited a South Carolina Walgreens facility where 40% of the staff have disabilities. Through partnerships with the Maine Bureau of Rehabilitation Services and other organizations, P&G has received assistance to find applicants and to provide training. People with disabilities represent a largely untapped group of potential employees which can help make up for the loss of workers as Maine's older population begins to retire. Other businesses, such as the Aroostook Centre Mall in Presque Isle and the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport, have long traditions of hiring workers with disabilities and have greatly benefited from the experience.
