Abstract

According to a recent study done by the Boston Consulting Group, rising costs and lower worker productivity in China could bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S., especially in sectors such as technology, machinery, plastics, and rubber products. Manufacturers in low-cost, U.S. rural states will be seen by many companies as a more affordable and a less complicated alternative. Although Maine's average hourly wage for manufacturing employees is higher and worker productivity is lower than in other rural states, Maine offers cluster development in several key industries and quality workmanship.
