Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on the Maine Department of Labor's proposal to institute tougher penalties for unemployment fraud that would be prosecuted under the new crime of unemployment fraud instead of through the theft-by-deception statute. Businesses and state officials see tougher restrictions as a key deterrent, but some lawmakers and others question the need for a new law because there are so few cases and there are existing laws already in use.
